1. Resting the Knee Too Much
Complete rest won't help because it doesn't fix the root cause of why your knee hurts in the first place. If you have a muscle imbalance or mobility issue contributing to your knee pain, rest is basically like putting a band-aid on a much bigger problem. By resting you will lose strength and mobility, while not eliminating the primary cause. This will set you up for massive frustration.
2. Ignoring the Hips and Ankles
The body does not function in isolation, but instead is a sophisticated interplay of several muscle and joint actions. The hip and ankle are designed to be mobile and move in several planes of motion. Issues at either of these joints can lead to compensations and pain at your knee. If you only assess and work on the knee, you are likely missing out on full recovery.
3. Doing Too Much Too Soon
I see this one A LOT. When you have pain in your knee, your body will tend to avoid things that make it hurt. Then your body will adapt to those new movement patterns. So what happens is, after a few weeks of rest, you jump back in at full speed and start hurting again. It is critical to retrain your body back to how it should be moving, and then build back into your training in a progressive and systematic way. This will maximally decrease your chance of re-injury!
